Walking District Survey - Nashville - THANK YOU to all who participated. See Results!

Walking District Survey - Nashville - THANK YOU to all who participated.  See Results!

Walking Districts are soon to be in pilot in 3 neighborhoods.  In February, Walking Districts were approved by the Traffic and Parking Commission to be implemented in Hillsboro-West End, Cleveland Park (East Nashville) and Una (Antioch) on a pilot basis.  The speed limit, in these areas, will be lowered to 20mph on neighborhood streets and 25mph on collector street with proper signage.

In the Fall of 2016, we conducted a survey to understand walking habits in Nashville and what concerns are shared.  The results are below.

THANK YOU to all who participated!!!

yes, close call with cars on some patches of 23rd
    10/27/2016 7:02 AM
Yes! Every time I walk on Golf Club Lane I feel unsafe. As we all know, Golf Club is a major "cut through thoroughfare" between Hillsboro and Harding Rd/West End. On a given walk, maybe 2 or 3 times per week, a driver will slow down if they see me and I always wave and say "thank you". I wish we could have a speed trap on Golf Club; I could definitely suggest the best place for the police to be (e.g. intersection of GC and New Natchez Trace or Woodleigh or bottom of "hill" at GC and 22nd Ave)
    10/27/2016 5:38 AM

Yes. Constantly. People use Golf Club Lane as a cut-through. Without speed limit postings, speed bumps, etc, people will continue to speed and drive recklessly down Golf Club.
    10/26/2016 10:08 AM
No but I've actually had a few close calls driving at night in neighborhood and walkers are not wearing anything reflective!,

Yes, mostly during rush hour. The cut-through traffic does not slow for walkers and there are no sidewalks. The trees make for very dappled light making it hard to see (it is also why people LOVE to walk here!) walkers.

    11/1/2016 12:09 PM

Yes. Not yielding when in a crosswalk. Drivers talking or texting and not paying attention. Drivers pulling into the crossing area while I am crossing. Drivers not fully stopping at intersections or running lights.

yes. speeding cars and no sidewalks
    11/1/2016 7:47 AM
Yes. I was walking on Hillsboro in front of the mall, and a car pulled out from the "channeled" exit from Macy's and didn't look for pedestrians to the right--only to the left at traffic
    11/1/2016 7:45 AM
I was walking on the edge of the street and a car from a home construction site on our street (Belvidere Drive) was speeding and went airborne over a hill - it was a close call. I had to jump into the grass.

    11/1/2016 6:50 AM
Yes. I have had many close calls on 23td, between Sterling and Golf Club. There is a big hill between the 2 streets, and drivers coming up the hill (toward Golf a Club) take it WAY too fast. Drivers can't see pedestrians coming from Golf Club, and pedestrians can't see drivers coming from Sterling. I have also had a number of close calls with drivers coming down (and up) the big hill on Sterling (bottom at Sterling and Wortham

Many people keep an eye out b/c we are a walking neighborhood, but I walk my dogs and have had drivers slow down way too close to us.
    10/31/2016 11:19 AM
Yes, the intersection of 25th and Ashwood is constantly an issue. Many people are confused about the presence/absence of a stop sign. Almost daily, I see confused drivers at that intersection. Also, drivers cut through our neighborhood (Ashwood, Susnset, Linden) quite frequently with high speed. There are lots of children around and it is unsafe in my opinion.

Yes, because I have a dog on a lead. See above.
    10/27/2016 7:02 AM
If you mean, have I had to jump out of the way of an oncoming car? No. However there have been cars that do not bother to move over to opposite side of street and come within 2-3 feet from me - while they're on the phone! That's what makes me the most upset! These people appear so cavalier and discourteous - it appears that they can't be bothered with moving over for a pedestrian! As you can tell by now, I get really upset when that happens! The few times I have yelled and told people to "slow down", half the time I've been flipped off.
    10/27/2016 5:38 AM
yes; my dog was almost hit by speeders and I have almost been hit at night

I run in the dark, early morning and some evenings. Wear reflective gear and sometimes fear it is not enough. There need to be blinking lights at pedestrian crosswalks that are not at lights (like Graybar on Belmont, some of the belmont crosswalks, etc) Drivers do not pay attention to the white stripes. Need to at least have reflectivity and even better, blinking lights.

don't think 20mph would be honored without enforcement. People hardly honor a school zone and that is limited hours with patrol people.

I don't think 20mph will work. Traffic is bad enough at present speed limits. People might avoid the walking district slow speeds and push to other streets clogging those even more.
